If you’re looking for a rustic and charming way to update your dining room, you should consider adding a farmhouse touch. A farmhouse dining room is perfect for those who want to create a warm and inviting space where they can gather with family and friends.
In this blog post, we will discuss some of the key elements of farmhouse dining room design, as well as provide some tips on how you can get the look in your own home!
Farmhouse dining room ideas

To start our design, we need to focus on a few ideas and put together a mood board; this makes it easier to put your final design in place.
As I mention in many of my blog posts, a great way to get inspired is by collecting a selection of images that you like from the internet or Pinterest.
You may have seen a particular color scheme that you find attractive or a piece of art that has colors you like. It could even be materials.
There are many different ways to put together a mood/inspiration board. Pinterest is a good start, or use a word document or even a scrapbook. Play about with your choices until you are happy with the final look.
Remember to take into account a variety of colors, textures, and patterns to give the room an interesting look. For example, if all of your walls are cream or beige, pick out something that will contrast against the color.
Farmhouse dining room walls

The paint for the walls is probably one of the first projects you will have to tackle to create your farmhouse dining room.
There are so many different shades and tones to choose from it can be hard to know where to start. But don’t worry, we’re here to help! Here are a few tips for choosing the perfect paint color for your farmhouse dining room:
- Consider the overall style of your home. If you have a more traditional style, you may want to stick with neutrals like beige or white.
- If you want to add a pop of color, think about what colors will complement the other design elements in your room.
- Consider the mood you want to create in your dining room. If you want it to be a relaxing space, you might want to choose a calming color like blue or green.
- Don’t forget about the lighting in your room! The paint color you choose will look different in different types of light, so make sure to test it out in the space before you commit.
A typical color scheme for a more traditional dining room could be creams, nudes, and brown tones. For a more modern farmhouse dining room, a good selection of greys is a good choice.
If you are feeling totally creative, wallpaper or put up some faux cladding in wood or incorporate a brick effect wall.

Maybe choose an accent wall or white walls with neutral shades. The choice of color really depends on how much natural light you have to work with and what furniture you have chosen, the position of the accent wall, etc.
Accent walls can be darker or lighter. Think about what you want to put on that particular wall and work around it.

Farmhouse dining room lighting
When it comes to farmhouse dining room lighting, you have a few different options. You can go with a more traditional chandelier, or you could opt for something like pendant lights or wall sconces.
Pendant lights are a great option if you want to add a bit of personality to your space. There are so many different styles to choose from, so you’re sure to find something that fits your taste.
Farmhouse dining room chandelier
Chandeliers are a classic choice for farmhouse dining rooms, but they can be quite expensive. If you’re on a budget, you can try looking for a used chandelier at a thrift store or antique shop.
If budget is not an option and you want something as a centerpiece, then be inspired. Make sure it is the right size to hang above your dining room table as well.
Wall sconces are another popular option for farmhouse dining room lighting. They provide a softer light than a chandelier, and they can be a great way to add some extra lighting without taking up too much space.
A floor-standing lamp can also look attractive when designing your farmhouse dining room lighting. Perfect if you want to create more subtle lighting.

Another variety of accent lighting is a table lamp. These can be positioned on side tables, a credenza, or on a bar. You are trying to incorporate country-style decor, so metal and wood-based accents will work well in your design.
As I mentioned before, consider where the lights are going to be positioned, if you have outlets available and what color the wall is behind the light. It will help you enormously before purchasing.

Farmhouse dining room tables
Farmhouse dining room tables can come in all shapes and sizes, and I go more into depth with what is available in our article ‘10 Beautiful farmhouse dining room tables for your home.
A traditional farmhouse dining room table can be purchased in a variety of wood. If you have a small dining room, consider a round dining table; for a larger room, look at something long and rectangular.
Before choosing your dream farmhouse dining room table, be aware of how many people will be seated on a regular basis. Do you have regular dinner parties, and how many people will you invite?
If you have a large family, you could also consider purchasing a table that has an extendable section when everyone is coming for dinner. The design all depends on how many you need to cater to and the size of your dining room.

Farmhouse dining room chairs
Many tables are now bought without chairs, so you have the option to choose the style of dining room chairs that suit your daily living habits.
The options don’t stop at just chairs. You may consider a bench against a wall and a few chairs around your dining room table.
Comfort is key at a dining room table so try out a few different chairs to see if they are comfortable and will fit in with your furniture scheme.
Country-style dining chairs could be made of wood or metal. You may just want to mix your chairs up slightly and have different fabrics or colors.
Consider the space; make sure you have enough room to pull the chair out comfortably, and it works cohesively within your design.
If you cannot afford new chairs, check out your local adverts or Marketplace. Sometimes a good bargain can be had online.
Farmhouse dining room decor
I always find this is the fun part. The added extras make your room pop.
Another piece of furniture you can add to your farmhouse dining room ideas is a credenza. Not just there as a beautiful focal point but also as storage for your serving dishes, glasses, plates, etc.
If you don’t have the budget for a credenza, search around for a vintage wooden dresser or a bookshelf and decorate it with greenery, bottles of wine, and other interesting pieces. Perfectly placed up against a blank wall.
If you have wooden floors, sometimes it is a good idea to soften the room with textiles and possibly a rug. A rug will pull the room together and can be positioned directly under the dining room table.
Rugs can be easily cleaned, and many are stain-resistant. Choose a rug with a pattern if you have a wooden floor in your dining area.
The pattern you choose can incorporate the colors within your theme, which will pull your design together.
If you have a fireplace in your dining room, then incorporate a rug in front of it instead of under the dining room table to make the room cozier.
Art adds a finishing touch.
A piece of art is always a good focal point in a dining room. Choose from a country-style print, an original canvas, or a printed abstract.
Choose your colors wisely. Pick out colors from the art and be inspired when it comes to choosing your paint.

The Mood / Inspiration Board
High-end Farmhouse dining rooms ideas
To help you along, I have created a mood board/inspiration board using items that I feel would work well when planning a farmhouse dining room.
I have incorporated two choices for color schemes. One is a traditional choice of neutral/rustic colors, and the other which are grey for a more modern farmhouse dining room.
The budget for this board is in the higher range and without paint and flooring comes in at just under $12,000. This does include all of the items that you see on the board above.
Dining table, four chairs, rug, credenza, pendant light, table lamps, plants, and art.
This setup will work well in an average size dining room.
Obviously, this is just a general idea of how your dining room could look.

Pick up the items on this mood board/inspiration board for $2,000. The package includes four chairs, a dining room table, a rug, a credenza, two lamps, plants, ceiling light, art, and candles. All you need to buy is your paint.
This combination can also work well with a selection of pale blues or greens instead of traditional neutral colors. Pick out inspiration from the art, or upload a photo to a paint website to visualize how the paint would look on your walls.
